Our Friday Forum series, “Meet the Dream Team”, will take a behind the scenes look into our family of 8 that make all the magic happen. First up, Nick, our Director of International Relations.
Question: What is your favorite or most inspiring quote?
Answer: “The power of imagination makes us infinite.” -John Muir
Question: What is something you have to deal with in your position, that you want to fix or help with or make a personal impression on?
Answer: The Silicon Valley model doesn’t allow for an abundance of opportunity for international startups to thrive, especially those pursuing solutions to critical global challenges facing society and our planet. By activating Silicon Valley Forum’s powerful network and reach, I hope to allow for more opportunities for transformative ideas from around the world to thrive.
Question: What is it that you do you do here? 😊
Answer: I lead SVF’s activities with international clients, connecting them with the people, places and ideas that make Silicon Valley a special place. Our work extends to companies and governments around the world that are looking for innovation strategies, as well as startups that seeking marketing entry and fundraising opportunities in the United States.
Question: What are your credentials/past experience, for working in your position?
Answer: In recent years, I have advised early stage startups on growth strategies as well as led thought leadership and program development for an institutional investor think tank.
Question: What is your personal super power, strength, & weakness?
- Super Power:“Systems Thinking” – Being able to see the forest and the trees, including the underground root system
- Strength:International Road Warrior
- Weakness:Lazy Saturdays
Question: What do you like about working at SVF?
Answer: I like that every day is different. I never know who I will speak to or meet, and what new ideas I’ll come across.
Question: Tell me about your background and where you are from originally?
Answer: I grew up mostly in New Mexico but have called California home for the past seven years, with long stints in between in China and Japan. These experiences living and working abroad really impacted how I look at international development and the necessary inputs to create future-proof societies. Innovation is part of this; I’m fascinated how markets all over the world are creating new avenues to harness inherent creativity to build a modern economy.
Question: What are the values that drive you in life and at work?
Answer: I always need to be learning and meeting new people who inspire. With that, I strive to educate others.
Question: Your top 3 favorite Podcasts/Books and/or TV shows?
Answer: Three podcasts that I listen to regularly: Reply All; The Pitch; and 99% Invisible
Question: What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?
Answer: I love to be outdoors – weekends you will most likely find me hiking/rock climbing in the mountains or at the beach surfing.
Question: What about your personality adds to the team dynamic?
Answer: I like to think that I bring a strategic vision to our team as well as an ability to communicate big ideas to those around me.
