Thank you for your interest in the Silicon Valley Forum (“SVF”). This privacy policy (“Policy”) governs describes our policies with respect to the collection, use, and disclosure of your personally identifiable information in connection with your use of the SVF Web Site (“Site”), SVF Events (“Events”), and subsidiary website Startupedia (“Site”).

1.Collection of Personal Information and other Information

  • Personal Information that you Provide

You may provide to us what is generally called personally identifiable information (which may include but is not limited to your name, email address, job title, company name, postal mailing address, interests, and telephone number, all of which is referred to in this policy as “Personal Information”) when you register for a member account on the Site, update your member profile, register to volunteer for us or to otherwise participate in one of our Events, or otherwise voluntarily provide Personal Information, such as by sending us email.

  • Automatically Collected Information

When you access the Site, we may send one or more cookies – small text files containing a string of alphanumeric characters – to your computer.  When you return to the Site, we retrieve information from cookies we stored on your computer.  We may use both session cookies and persistent cookies.  A session cookie disappears after you close your browser. A persistent cookie remains after you close your browser and may be used by your browser on subsequent visits to the Site.  Persistent cookies can be removed.  Please review your Web browser’s “Help” file to learn how to modify your browser’s cookie settings.

When we send you email messages, we may automatically record certain information from your web browser by using different types of technology, including cookies, as described above, standard log files, “pixel tags”, “clear gifs”, or “web beacons.”  This “automatically collected” information may include Internet Protocol address (“IP Address”) or other device address or ID, web browser and/or device type, the web pages or sites that you visit just before or just after the Site, the pages you view on Site, search queries you use to find the Site, and the dates and times that you visit the Site.

If automatically-collected information is used or intended to be used to identify you, it is Personal Information for purposes of this Policy.  Additionally, if we associate or combine this information with Personal Information, we will treat the associated or combined information as Personal Information under this Policy.

2.Event Policy

SVF hosts a wide range of Events and Conferences; including monthly meetings, business seminars, and immersion programs to provide education and facilitate connections within the startup community.

Generally, SVF events are open to the public, and SVF does not restrict attendees (including SVF staff and volunteers) from taking or photos or videos at events. By attending an SVF event, you acknowledge that you are in a public place, and that attendees (including SVF volunteers) may capture your image in photos and videos.  Nevertheless, SVF encourages event attendees to exercise common sense and good judgment, and respect the wishes of other attendees who do not wish to be photographed at the Events.
SVF uses photos and videos taken at its events for a variety of purposes, including publication on the SVF website. If you see any photos or profiles about yourself on the Site that you would like removed, please email us at info@siliconvalleyforum.com. Video content cannot be removed, altered, or edited.

3.Use of Personal Information

We use the information that you provide or that we collect (including automatically collected information) to operate, maintain, enhance, and provide our programs and services, including the features accessible through the Site.  In addition, the Personal Information you supply or that we collect from you allows us to provide you with event notices, our newsletter, other administrative communications, and information about programs, features, services, and opportunities that we believe our users may find of interest.  We may send you regular email communications in connection with distribution lists that you have chosen to be a part of.  We may also send email messages from time to time on topics we believe you may be interested in based on other information we have collected about you, such as interests you have expressed or events you have attended.  We also reserve the right to use your Personal Information to enforce our rights and the rights of third parties, and to investigate and ensure compliance with our policies.

4.Disclosure of Personal Information

Your privacy is important to us, and SVF is not in the business of selling your Personal Information.  Nonetheless, we may share your information with third parties in a variety of circumstances. The following is a list of third-party sites with whom we share your information:

  • Eventbrite – used to register attendees, send tickets and pertinent event information, and collect consent for email updates about upcoming events. We will, to the best of our abilities, never send you updates to which you have not consented. Read their privacy policy.
  • Google Analytics – used to measure the performance of this website
  • PayPal – used to process ticket payments and refunds.
  • MailChimp – used to manage email marketing subscriber lists and send emails to our subscribers. Read their privacy policy.
  • Hubspot – used for ongoing partnerships only. Hubspot is not used for regular communication, such as answering questions or providing basic information.
  • HotJar – used for tracking web activity such has heatmaps, clicks, and recordings.

We may disclose some Personal Information that you provide to us on the Site, such as in profiles about some of our volunteers or registered users, and in other promotional materials that we publish or distribute.  We may also disclose the information you provide in an aggregate (non-personally identifiable) form for a variety of statistical and reporting purposes.

We may share your Personal Information with other SVF members through our Member Resource Directory (“Directory”), and other features which allow you to communicate your information to others through the Site.  Any Personal Information provided in this manner may be used by the recipient without restriction.

We may provide Personal Information to affiliated organizations or other third party service providers for their use in performing internal functions (e.g., donation processing, shipping, data/web hosting, or administrative services) on our behalf. Third parties that perform internal functions on our behalf are only authorized by us to use Personal Information for the specific purposes for which it is made available to them.

We do not collect “sensitive” personal data (political opinions, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, etc); however, we may disclose Personal Information if we have a good-faith belief that doing so is required by a subpoena or other judicial or administrative order or otherwise required by law.  Additionally, we may disclose Personal Information where we, in good faith, deem it appropriate or necessary to prevent violation of our agreements; take precautions against liability; protect the rights, property, or safety of any individual or the general public; maintain and protect the security and integrity of our services or infrastructure; protect ourselves and our services from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful uses; investigate and defend ourselves against third-party claims or allegations; or assist government enforcement agencies.

Additionally, in the event of a change in ownership, or a merger with, acquisition by, or sale of assets to, another organization or entity, we reserve the right to transfer all of your Personal Information to that organization or entity.  In any such transfer, your Personal Information would remain subject to the Privacy Policy in place at the time your Personal Information was collected.

5.Your Choices

You may modify your Personal Information, and the types of communications you wish to receive from SVF, by emailing our Data Controller at info@siliconvalleyforum.com.  If you no longer wish to receive communications from SVFs relating to specific interests and subscriptions, please change those preferences by emailing us at info@siliconvalleyforum.com. We will, to the best of our ability, delete/”forget” your info per your request. Please note that you may still receive emails about upcoming Events based upon your attendance at past Events and about programs, features, services, and opportunities that we believe you may find of interest.

6.Data Security

We use reasonable physical, managerial, and technical safeguards to preserve the integrity and security of Personal Information in our control. We cannot, however, ensure or warrant the security of any Personal Information you transmit to us, or guarantee that your Personal Information will not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed.  Accordingly, you provide us with Personal Information at your own risk.  If we learn of a security systems breach, we may post a notice on the Site and may attempt to notify you electronically.

7.Children’s Privacy

IF YOU ARE UNDER 13 YEARS OF AGE, DO NOT USE OR ACCESS THE SITE.

We do not knowingly collect or maintain Personal Information from children under 13 years of age. If we learn that Personal Information collected through Site relates to a child under 13 years of age, we will take the appropriate steps to delete this information.

If you are the parent or legal guardian of a child under 13 who has provided his or her Personal Information to us through the Site, please contact us to have that child’s member account terminated and the Personal Information relating to the child deleted.

8.Third-Party Services

The Site may contain links to websites and services provided by third parties. For example, we have strategic relationships with many non-profits and universities to provide offerings that are complementary to our services.  Any Personal Information you provide on third-party sites or services is provided directly to that third party and is subject to that third party’s policies governing privacy and security.  We are not responsible for the content or privacy and security practices and policies of third-party sites or services to which links are displayed on the Site. We encourage you to learn about third parties’ privacy and security policies before providing them with Personal Information.

9.International Visitors

The Site is hosted in the United States. If you visit the Site from the European Union or any other region with laws governing data collection and use that may differ from United States law, please note that you are transferring your personal data to the United States. The United States does not have the same data protection laws as the European Union and other regions.  By providing Personal Information under this Policy, you consent to the use of Personal Information in accordance with this Policy and the transfer of your Personal Information to the United States.

10. Changes and Updates

We may occasionally update this Policy.  If we do, we will update the “last updated” date at the top of the Policy.  We encourage you to periodically review this Policy to stay informed about our collection, use, and disclosure of Personal Information on the Site.  In the event that we make a material change the Policy, we will attempt to contact you through the email or physical address we have on file for you.  Generally, unless we receive your consent to do otherwise, we handle your Personal Information in accordance with the version of the Policy that was in place at the time of collection.
